The fenced off area on the banks of Michigan State University’s Red Cedar River caught my eye. Decending onto the concrete slab where mallards gather to keep warm and eat bread crumbs offered by friendly passerbys, a snow-topped ice sculpture carved out by the rushing water stood solemnly over a series of small falls.

I drove past a greenish lake. On the ground, it looked like what I would call a swamp. But, I thought it would be interesting to see what an aerial view would look like. I found this intriguing pattern from above. I don’t believe that it’s good for the lake life, but it is a fascinating pattern.

Olmsted Falls and Berea Ohio are known as a quarry town for grist stones to grind wheat, corn and other grains. This area has vast quantities of sandstone that were perfect for making the round stones. Post mining the areas overgrew and trees like this American Beech took root next to the quarry
